St. Andrew's Church: Roker, Sunderland 1905 Edward Prior by Trevor Garnham, St. Andrew's Church exemplifies Edward Prior's belief that rational building should replace architecture conceived as a style. Superficially, St. Andrew's appears plain, even roughly made. But closer inspection reveals this simplicity to be the mason's response to the nature of the local porous limestone, and Prior alluding to Saxon buildings. The interior is equally austere dominated by massive stone arches spanning the 52-foot-wide nave. Concrete, iron, an integrated heating and ventilating system, all point this building towards modernism. At close quarters the congregation is brought into contact with the beautiful furniture of Ernest Gimson, ceiling by MacDonald Gill, carpets by Morris, a tapestry by Burne-Jones and stained glass by A. H. Payne. The ambiguity of the whole building makes St. Andrew's fascinating, particularly the interior sparkling in the light refracted through Prior's patented 'Early English Glass'.
Reinforced concrete - Reinforced concrete (ferro concrete) is concrete in which reinforcement bars ("rebars") or fibers have been incorporated to strengthen the naturally brittle concrete. The use of reinforced concrete is a relatively recent invention, usually being considered as covering the last 150 years, Jean-Louis Lambot was the first to use reinforcing in concrete in 1848. Concrete pylon - A concrete pylon is an electricity pylon made from reinforced concrete. Concrete pylons are manufactured as a rule in the concrete work and put up at the place of assembly. Concrete Wave Country - Concrete Wave Country is a public concrete skatepark in Nashville, Tennessee that was constructed by Wally Holladay of California Skateparks in the spring and summer of 2004. Concrete Wave Country occupies approximately 20,000 square feet (2,000 m²) adjacent to Nashville's public wave pool, Wave Country. Insulating concrete forms - Insulating Concrete Forms or Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF or ICFs) are stay-in-place formwork for energy-efficient, cast-in-place (reinforced) concrete walls.
